Relationship between interparental functioning and adolescents' level of Machiavellianism: A multi-perspective approach

Childrearing antecedents of Machiavellianism have been investigated, finding that cold, rejecting, and neglecting parenting is associated with Machiavellianism. However, there is a paucity of research on Machiavellianism and family functioning that is suggested to be a stronger predictor of children's adjustment than parenting. In two cross-sectional, self-report studies with 266 adolescents (115 boys) and 98 families raising adolescents (51 boys), we investigated the relationship between adolescent Machiavellianism and interparental functioning. We found that some aspects of perceived interparental conflict and poor quality coparenting were associated with higher levels of Machiavellianism in boys. The association between interparental discord and Machiavellianism has been discussed with respect to previous studies on family functioning, child maladjustment, and Machiavellianism. The selective relationship between measured indices of interparental functioning and Machiavellianism in boys has been discussed using the male vulnerability hypothesis and the distinct pathways model.

Applying the Paradigm of Relational Ethics into Contextual Therapy.

Ivan Boszormenyi Nagy introduced with his contextual therapy a challenging theory into the world of family therapy. It is rooted in a relational ethical perspective on human relations and shifts the focus of therapy from pathology to evoking reciprocal care and a genuine dialogue, based on the conviction that inter-human relations are resources for individual growth and health. This article presents a research project on the practice of the founder himself, to describe how the principles of the contextual theory and therapy can be integrated into concrete therapeutic interventions. Using the Constant Comparison Method, the authors found six clusters of interventions representing methodical elements through which Ivan Boszormenyi- Nagy applies the paradigm of his approach.

A Contextual Therapy Framework For MFT Educators Facilitating Trustworthy Asymmetrical Training Relationships

This article provides a conceptual framework for asymmetrical relationships between family therapy educators and trainees. Our framework is based on contextual family therapy, and we apply the concepts of trust, entitlement, self-validation, and loyalty to training relationships. We highlight the value of educators modeling responsible uses of power in addition to teaching trainees clinical concepts and skills. We propose that training can be a process where trainers earn constructive entitlement through their interactions with trainees, who then give to future clients, supervisees, and trainees to continue the cycle of intergenerational trustworthiness. We also provide examples that illustrate the application of contextual therapy skills such as multidirected partiality, I-Thou relating, acknowledgment, validation, and accountability to family therapy training.TEST

Telling what the Child Gives. A Family Therapy of Giving, Receiving and Giving Back.

The aim of this article is to study the contextual approach, which is a trend in the family therapy. Boszorményi-Nagy, its creator has invented a system of interviews that questions different family members about their relationships in terms of giving, receiving and giving back. The therapist doesn’t give up on this option thanks to a lever of a questioning that make people think and talk about the “relational account” of each member with the close ones. Böszörményi-Nagy insists on the fact that we forget to take into account what the child gives, the therapy takes sides to help the parents, to say the words that credit the child’s clandestine contributions. This therapeutic proposal to express the deficits of reciprocity or recognition is especially relevant when the giving cycle is blocked and reveals itself by symptoms in the heart of the relationship.
